Norfolk awaits us for a replay of our reunion of 10 years
ago! We are staying at the Sheraton Norfolk Waterside Hotel again.
The
room rate is $139, not including taxes and is good for three days prior
and post the reunion. Parking
is additional at a rate of $14 a night for self-parking. Many other hotels were
reviewed and this one had the best location, rate and surrounding
amenities for our group. Breakfast is not included, but there are a few
nearby restaurants as well as the hotel’s restaurant for you to be able
to purchase your breakfast You can use this link to make your room
reservation:
Book your group rate for USS Hugh Purvis (DD-709) Reunion
Or you can call direct using this number - 1-757-622-6664 (mention Hugh Purvis Reunion
The dates for the reunion are
June 11th – 14th.
On Monday, June 12th
we will have a tour of the harbor out past all of the Norfolk Naval
base and see what vessels are docked there, as compared to when we
docked there many years ago.
After
the harbor tour, we will have lunch on our own in the many restaurants
available near the hotel. In the afternoon we will visit the USS
Wisconsin and hold our memorial service on the deck of the ship. After that we will hold
our annual business meeting in the hospitality room at 3:30PM.
On Tuesday, June 13th we will drive up to the Mariners Museum in
Newport News. It
is a fascinating museum, and we will have more time there this year as
we learned that it takes awhile to see all that this museum has to
offer .
Lunch is included for this tour and your lunch
choices are included in the registration form. We will return to the hotel about
mid-afternoon and then have our banquet that evening.
As
you can see, we have scaled back the tours to not be the full day so
people have more time to relax and enjoy time visiting their friends
and shipmates in our wonderful hospitality room.
On Sunday evening, you can book a dinner cruise on the
harbor which includes dinner and dancing.
We did this 10 years ago, but there was not enough interest for us to
actually include it as a tour option this year.
If you would like to book that on your own, you can go to:
Norfolk City Cruises - Spirit Dinner Cruise
The cost of the cruise is almost $80 per
person.
If you are coming in early or want to stay a few days
extra, there is so much to see in this area.
Both Historic Jamestown and Colonial Williamsburg are only
about a 1-hour drive north of our hotel.
In
addition, Norfolk has a beautiful botanical garden, Hampton Roads Naval
Museum, Hermitage Museum & Gardens, MacArthur Memorial Museum
(within walking distance), and many more interesting sites to see. I
encourage to visit the Norfolk Visitor center site to see what all this
area has to offer:
I am excited to be going back to Norfolk again. We can only hope that this
time we will not have a hurricane while we are there!!!
There is also a new area next to our hotel called
“Waterside District” with many eateries and entertainment venues.
Check it out.
I would love to see a great turn out for this year. I
think it is time we all made a real effort to try to attend. None
of us are getting any younger and our numbers are going down each year.
This is such a great Naval city with so much history and one so many of
our shipmates spent time at during their time in the Navy. There
is so much to see and do in this city and June is a great time to visit
the city and take in some of the many sites it has to offer.
See you in June!!
